Credit goes to Pieter de Waal, owner of Vinotage for the concept of the logo. Created in a popular Cape "freestyle", the logo represented his connoisseurs' wine shop in Tygerberg, Cape Town.
In South Africa, wine labels and logos traditionally look conservative – we're talking at least a century or two old! So not wanting to alienate the traditional wine-buying market, we kept the earthy/wine-like colours while using a more nineties Cape Town feel using the font and overall design.
Pieter has a huge love of wine, and this would be the start of his hobby turning into a career. He would later be responsible for the marketing of Paarl Vintners and the Durbanville Wine Valley Association, before leaving to create his popular Hermit on the Hill house wine label, which he runs from Bellville, for which we also did the wine label design.
